Resurgent is a digital line portrait of a young Black woman by London artist Paola Minekov. She looks straight out at you, calm and certain, her long natural curls drawn in loose, restless black lines. The drawing is black and white on a coral red ground, and flecks of that red break through her hair, her cheek and her throat, as if the colour underneath is still pushing to the surface.

The drawing is spare: a few confident lines and a lot of open white, which is what gives her face its presence. On the wall she holds the room. The red is warm and bold enough for a hallway, a study or a living room with plenty of white or black, and her steady gaze makes her good company above a desk.
